How to move to Gibraltar with your pet?
Moving day is accompanied by its share of stress – packing all your belongings, transporting them to the moving truck, and then, just when it seems like you’re done, you realize you have to unpack everything.
But when you have pets, there are other things to think about – getting them safely to their new home, maintaining their routine as much as possible, and getting them used to their new environment.
There are different things pet owners need to consider before, during, and after moving day. Here are some tips on how to pack your pet’s belongings.
Before the move to Gibraltar
Make sure your new place is pet-friendly. First, make sure your new home allows pets, and then think about your pet’s specific needs, such as whether it requires a yard, minimal stairs (depending on your pet’s physical needs or abilities), and whether it’s a safe neighborhood and places for cats to climb. It is also worth finding out if there are pet-friendly areas in the neighborhood, such as dog parks, stores, and restaurants.
Take your pet’s records with you: before transporting your pet, you’ll want to be sure you have a copy of his or her records. This will be necessary if you have to go to the vet along the way and is also good to have when visiting a new local vet. Make sure your pets have up-to-date identification tags.
To protect your pet from fleas and ticks, it’s a good idea to talk to your pet’s veterinarian about flea prevention before the move, just in case.
Moving Day
Anticipate your pet’s stress: before the move arrives or before you start loading boxes onto the truck, put your pets in a quiet room with the door closed. This will ensure that your cat or dog doesn’t panic and try to run for the door.
Plan the road trip: If you plan to drive with your furry friends, make frequent stops. When you stop for rest and bathroom breaks, take your dog for a walk and give him a cool glass of water. If you’re transporting a cat, be sure to show him where his litter box is and offer him some food and water at stops.
After the move
Allow your pets to get used to each room, starting with allowing them to adjust to a room they consider their “den,” which should include their favorite toys, familiar blankets, treats, water bowls, food, and a cat litter box. When they seem to have become accustomed to it, gradually move them to other rooms in the house.
Keep a consistent routine: In your new home, keep feeding and walking times identical to your previous home. Dogs are very adaptable to new situations, but try to maintain a consistent and predictable routine.
If the stress of moving persists, increase walks: If you can, increase the number of walks your dog takes daily to decrease stress. And if you can’t, look for dog walkers or daycares in your new neighborhood.
Moving to Gibraltar with your pet
Gibraltar is a great place to live, of course, it is also a great place for pets and their owners. In addition to the good weather that this territory enjoys almost all year round, there are excellent facilities.
However, please note that all cats and dogs belonging to and accompanying residents of EU member states may enter the territory of Gibraltar provided they are in good health and have a valid rabies vaccination certificate. In the case of primary rabies vaccination, the vaccination must be administered at least 28 days prior to the arrival of the dog or cat in Gibraltar.
Cats and dogs on board yachts visiting Gibraltar will not be allowed ashore unless they are properly vaccinated against rabies, as above, and provided that the owner can prove that the cat or dog in question has not been in any country outside the EUA during the preceding six months.
As we have already mentioned, one of the first things we must take into account is that the place where we are going to move is pet friendly.
